Event Description

This 2 day course introduces the use of GIS using the Open Source GIS solution, QGIS. QGIS is a free desktop GIS, and provides the same GIS functionality as commercial desktop GIS solutions such as ArcGIS or MapInfo. QGIS is completely free.

We’d recommend using QGIS if you have a small number of GIS users in your organisation who need access to more complex functionality offered by a typical desktop GIS.

The course is taught by means of tutor-led teaching and hands-on exercises, and will quickly get you up to speed with GIS using QGIS. Attendees should have basic IT knowledge, but prior knowledge of GIS is not necessary.

Attending this course entitles delegates to receive 4 CPD points towards their continual Professional Development under the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Chartered Geographer scheme.

This course is most suitable for:

  • People who are either completely new to GIS or those who already have some experience of using GIS software but are now looking to make the transition to an open source GIS system.

Course Outline – Day 1

Module 1: Introducing Open Source GIS

  • GIS concepts and the concept of Open Source

Module 2: Getting started with QGIS

  • Opening QGIS
  • Creating a new QGIS Project
  • Adding data and working through some starter exercises

Module 3: Starting on Data

  • Data and data attribution

Module 4: Symbology

  • Symbolising data
  • Using symbology to make better maps

Module 5: Selections

  • Selecting data (by location and /or attributes )
  • Advanced query selections

Module 6: Printing

  • Print composer tool
  • Designing a map
  • Copyright information and watermarks

Course Outline – Day 2

Module 7: Editing

  • Creating new Shapefiles
  • Editing using widgets
  • Creating Shapefiles from tables
  • Editing techniques (eg. merging and topological editing)

Module 8: Enhanced Symbology

  • Enhanced symbology in QGIS
  • Categorisation, graduation and rule-based symbology

Module 9: Geoprocessing

  • Using QGIS to create data derived from other datasets
  • Clip, difference, buffers and intersections + other items in the geoprocessing menu

Module 10: Analysis

  • Spatial analysis
  • Spatial joins and tabular joins
  • The QGIS calculator
